Presidential Visit, Political Season, and Catching up

My apologies for failing to blog for the past few days. They got away from me. Lots to catch up on.

Presidential Visit
Going to cover The President is always a good assignment. I think it's interesting to watch the Secret Service work, the national press corps is interesting to watch and of course, it's cool to be a few feet away from the leader of the free world.
A couple of observations from the event.
-I was really glad to see that the Clubb's had invited a diverse group of guests. I've been at, and heard of some of these political events where the questions are pre-screened, even written by the campaign or politician's office that's running the thing. If you watched yesterday, you know neither was true.
-I thought it was a little cheesy for the President to go up and knock on the door of the Clubb's house. We were in back so we couldn't see it, but we were told that's what he was going to do. I mean really? It's not that he's such a big deal that he doesn't need to knock...it's just sort of dis ingenious...we've all been waiting for him for hours.
-I don't report often...check that...at all. I forget quickly how physically tiring it can be. Seriously, a lot of hurry up and wait that turns into a few minutes of flying around to get it done.
-Beaverdale is a great place.

Political Season
Seen the political commercials out there lately? Anyone get the feeling it's going to get nasty? Here's an observation. A few years ago we all cringed when a candidate took swipes at a sitting congressman that were childish, below the belt and uncalled for. You would think that Congressman would think twice before taking his current opponent out of context, painting him as some sort of snake oil salesmen, and generally trying to tear down his character.
Shouldn't races for high political office be about ideas? Are yours better than the other guys?
I imagine the voters are going to reward the guy who's commercials are about ideas not attacks.

Catching up
I am still trying to catch up physically. I played A LOT of golf this last weekend. It was great to see some good friends in the Quad Cities. I can't say i played well but I think I fixed a big glitch in my swing. The part about still being sore is a function of being old. I am starting to realize I can't play 36 holes of golf in a day...ever again.

I hope you all have a good day. We'll look for a little more fiber in the blog's diet so we can make sure you see a post tomorrow.

Sorry about the lack of blogging. At the President's event in DSM today. More on that later.

Cost of War, Jaw Dropping Story, and A Quick Break

Good Morning.

I can't stop talking about one of the stories I saw online this morning. I'll get to that in a minute...first some other news

Cost of War
Two stories on this same subject caught my attention and unfortunately I don't think they will be the last of their kind.
The first came in an email from a woman who's husband is training with the Guard in California. His Grandma died and he can't come home for the funeral. That's terrible, but it is the cost of the deployment. These guys may be in California, but the Guard spokesperson pointed out, and I agree...focus on training, and doing their job is really important right now. it will increase the chances everyone will come home safe. Isn't that the most important goal?
If you needed a reminder of just how dangerous operating in Afghanistan can be, the helicopter crash this week should serve. An Iowan was on that helicopter and lost his life. It doesn't have to be enemy fire that is the most dangerous part of an overseas deployment. Everything about the job these men and women will do is dangerous. We are so lucky they serve.

Egg Hearing
You prayed for the people who got sick? Great...all is forgiven...I'm sure that's what the Federal Government wants to hear. I'm not knocking prayer, but I think the Congressional committee Jack Decoster was in front of yesterday had a few other things in mind when they called him. The second owner of Hilendale Farms didn't talk. The guy who testified about the government response said.. they didn't have standards written down anywhere so they couldn't do anything. I'm not sure that's the response I want from my government. If there's a house on fire, I'm not sure I want the firefighters saying...no one wrote down the procedures on how to fight the fire...so we let it burn. Aren't there some things (a pile of manure so large it busts a door open for instance) that common sense takes over and you just throw some water on the fire?

Early Voting
You can vote...right now. You don't have to but you can. No excuses November 5th.

Jaw Dropper
You'll want to go to Fox 2 Detroit's website and watch this video of auto workers drinking and smoking pot on their lunch break. It's a half hour break by the way. They made it to the liquor store, to a park, downed beer, booze and smoked a little pot...then back to making the safest cars on the road right?
So there's my thing with this. The UAW locals in every community across the country should write a letter to it's national leadership calling for the firing of the workers and their dismissal from the Union. It's that simple. Anything less is an insult to the hardworking men and women who bust their butt every day up at that Firestone plant or down at Titan Tires.
If Union Workers and their leadership across the country try to defend this or deflect blame somewhere else...they are the joke this piece makes them out to be.
Anyone who knows a union worker knows the vast majority do their job well and take pride in it. Most are not the caricature presented here. They should stand up and do the thing they know is right. Loyalty should only be reserved for those who honor their fellow workers.

A Quick Break
So I'm taking a day off to go meet some friends to play A LOT of golf. I renew the statement I've made here a lot. My wife is the best. My Mother-in-law is too. Not that she needs an excuse to see her Grandsons, but she's being really helpful by coming to Des Moines to lend Sally a hand.

Have a great day!

Egg in Your Face, Gonna Get Some emails about That, and Stuck on You

Good Morning!
Live television is always fun. Especially when you pop up on camera when you're not supposed to. Thankfully the crew in the back isn't mad at me...the Control Room switcher just went haywire about 5:57. I popped up on camera and for those of you wondering what we do when we're off camera? At this particular moment I was fixing my hair. Great, wouldn't want to reinforce a stereotype.

Our Director Joe looked like his own NASCAR pit crew fixing the thing in about four minutes. Good Job Joe!

To the news
Egg in your Face
Do we actually think we're going to get any answers from Congressional hearings on the Egg recall? Congressional Hearing...now that's an oxymoron. More like Congressional talking...or Congressional vanity exercise.
I'd bet all the money in my wallet right now that the lawmakers on that panel will use this hearing, not to ask questions or find answers...but to spout off.
In a way, Senator Grassley was right. The distributors who buy from these farms have to stop buying from them. That's the best way to put any irresponsible company out of business. If no one buys from them, they either shape up or they go out of business. Would you be willing to pay 20 or 30 cents more per dozen eggs of you could assure they were safe?

Jobs of any Color
We'll hear what Iowa's unemployment rate is later on this morning. We should have the numbers on the news at Noon. Should be interesting to see if Iowa firms are hiring again.
Was there any more ridiculous comment than the one from a group of economists yesterday. I know that by definition the recession ended in June of 2009, but did we need to hear that yesterday? I would venture the guess that most Americans aren't seeing evidence of that on the ground.

Green Jobs??
So let me get this straight...The Governor wants to build a place where we can train more green workers. He says he's double the number of green collar jobs in Iowa if he's re-elected. But the Center to train those workers hasn't been built, there's no money budgeted to do it, they don't know where they'd get the teachers and even if they had the money today...it would take two years before the thing would be up and running.
Until this fantasy job center can be built...they'll just do what they're doing now and help DMACC train people. Must be election season.

I feel the emails Coming
If any of you were watching this morning about 5:20, the tag to and NBC produced story about Alzheimer's disease said the cost of caring for someone with Alzheimer's would be about $40,000. The tag went on to say that the cost of the same care in China would be $3,000. My first thought was....maybe but what's the quality of the care?
I immediately heard keyboards across Central Iowa fire up questioning that statistic...maybe even questioning my political leanings or my patriotism. The numbers come from the study out about the cost of treating Alzheimer's.

Off to find a split box pring. We got the Master Bedroom done but then realized we couldn't fit the box spring upstairs. Oooopppps!
Ahhh the joys of home ownership.

Traffic Stops, Palin Visit and Happy Birthday

Good Morning

We'll start with our first Happy Birthday of the morning...to the U.S. Constitution. the document is 223 years old today. There's so much talk about what the Founders intended and what power the government really does have these days. It can't be bad. The more we know about the Constitution and our rights...the better.

Traffic Stops
Speaking of...The DPS and about a dozen local law enforcement agencies are doing a traffic checkpoint. Law enforcement says it's a way to keep people safe behind the wheel but some defense attorney's are reminding us that we don't have to answer questions of officers if they stop you. You have rights in that situation, though I think a traffic stop is one of the most stressful you can be in.

Palin Visit
The Register points out this morning that if former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is running in the Caucuses, she has a strange way of showing it. She has no events planned with party leaders here in Iowa...no meetings with big donors that anyone knows about. Looks like it's an in and out speech at the Republican Party's Reagan dinner. We'll see. You don't have to pay the $100 for the ticket. The speech will be carried on C-span.

Record Donation
The Principal Charity Classic announced it was giving a record $620,000 to local charities that benefit kids. The tournament is also hoping that the total raised for charity along with the excellent reviews from players gives the event a chance for tournament of the year on the Champions tour again. Whether you like golf or not, it's not the worst thing in the world for an event like this to generate about $20 million in economic impact and give back more than a half million to charities.
They usually make the events a lot of fun for us to cover. Thursday members of the media paired up with kids who've benefited from these donation. We competed in a little putting contest. My team included Tomas Bonus and Abbie Welbes. Abbie is a five year old and hit two of our best putts to help us win. Congrats to Thomas and Abbie!

Finally a Happy birthday to my Father-in-law Rick. He's in town to celebrate with us and make a stop at the late summer Farmer's market. We're glad to have him here!

Crowd Control, Heroes and Shelley

Good Morning...
If you missed the news here's what you missed.

Crowd Control
It's not clear to me exactly what happened at Evelyn Davis Park last night. Police got a lot of calls about a fight. There were clearly a lot of agitated people there.
It's also clear there are a lot of people who care about the neighborhood and want to make sure that park is better known as an asset for it's families than as a place where people fight.

Heroes
It shouldn't surprise anyone that The Iowa soldier who's being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor doesn't believe he deserves it. I have never read or heard about a hero who thinks he deserves a medal.

Shelley
I never met Jack Shelley but it's clear why people talk about him with such admiration. The iconic WHOTV broadcaster died at the age of 98 Tuesday.
It was fun hearing about his career at WHO radio and TV. It is a good reminder that we have a responsibility to the people who've come before us. They worked hard at giving WHO a rich history. We benefit from that history and reputation.

Busy Week
It's been a fun week and it's going to get even busier. Sunday I was happy to be asked to help out at the Concourse D'Elegance at Salisbury house. I learned a lot about European Compact cars.
Tuesday I had a lot of fun helping out with the Young Women's Resource Center Celebrity Servers Night at Centro. I didn't do a lot of serving but I talked to a lot of nice people who gave of their time and resources to help out. I was happy to provide a little entertainment.
Tonight there's an announcement about how much money the Principal Charity Classic raised for local charities. I get to do a little putting contest beforehand so that should be fun.
I mention these things cause it's the United way's Day of Action. 3,000 volunteers will make a difference for local charities by donating their time. The point is, it doesn't matter how small or insignificant you think your contribution to non-profits or charities might be. They appreciate the support and you never know where you're going to find more ways to contribute.
I hope you have a good day.

Debate, Luke Warm Tea, and Done

Good Morning!
For some reason I'm having a tough time coming up with enough to say. Comments help. You can also email topics you'd like to hear more about. Our emails are under our profiles on the website.

Debate
Well it's a good thing we had a debate for the gubernatorial candidates last night. That way we could hear longer forms of their TV commercials. I didn't learn anything I didn't know.
I sure wish these guys wouldn't sound so trained. I don't feel like I'm hearing what they actually think. I'm hearing a line that tested well or some zinger that a consultant came up with. I am not hearing how an Iowan, would lead Iowa.

Luke Warm Tea
The contrast on election day Tuesday was striking. Across the country Tea Party candidates followed large rallies with wins at the polls. Christine O'Donnell won the Republican Senate Primary in Delaware. The Republican establishment there said she couldn't get elected Dog Catcher. So...I guess the experts were wrong on that one.
Meanwhile here in Iowa, The Tea Party staged no massive run on the polls yesterday. In communities across the state, local tax issues, the Tea Party's bread and butter, were decided by less than one percent of registered voters.
Going to a rally and getting on TV is fun. Complaining about "throwing those bums out" is sure a popular sentiment, but actually participating in the choices elected officials make is a LOT harder. Let me be clear...I am not trying to disparage the Tea Party Movement or the people in it. My point is...talking about the problems is a good first step. It's time for voters to take the second step.

Possum Problem
Anyone have a good way to get a possum out of a garage? A good way to keep them out of the garage? They're like the giant rats in The Princess Bride. I'm willing to take any suggestions you might have...and I'm actually thinking they might be entertaining for the group.

Done
We're finished with our Bathroom project, and I think we can move into our Master Bedroom today. It's going to be weird living in that room, but I'm ready to have the boxes out of the Living Room.

Hope you all have a good day!

Out of the Steak Fry, First Football Weekend and Money Pit

Good Morning!

Lots to talk about from the weekend...

Out of the Steak Fry
I think Dems are going to feel like they got thrown into the fire for the next eight weeks. The run up to the mid-term elections may not be pleasant. This is the cost of being the party in power. if you don't produce results, people start to blame you. And before someone emails and says "It's the Republican's fault for not letting the Dems do what they want." The Dems have control of the Congress and The White house. There isn't anything stopping Democrats from doing what they want. In fact I heard some analysis from NPR this morning, not the most conservative of media outlets, saying this Congress has actually done more than most...passed a lot of legislation, financial reform, stimulus etc. Democrats are being judged on their solutions to problems.

Vaccines
As a new parent I will admit I paused to ask questions and research some of the claims about child vaccines and autism. A new study from the CDC finds no evidence to connect vaccines with autism. I think it's fair for parents to be asking what doctors are using on their children, but at some point you have to trust that the levels of government oversight, the doctors themselves and the pharmaceutical companies to do what is best for consumers. If that seems naive to some of you, I am not being naive, I am being practical and sceptical. If all of those people were in on a massive conspiracy, someone at some level would blow the whistle.

First Football
How much fun was the first weekend of NFL football and the second week of college ball. Notre Dame lost but it was one of the best games of the weekend. that's how one of the oldest rivalries in college football should end. Two, and potentially a third score in the final few minutes made that a great game.
The Iowa/ISU game didn't live up to the hype, but I think we know Iowa is for real. Hawk fans need to start cheering for the clones, cause each big 12 win they get...that point differential starts looking better and better. ISU, take heart. Iowa is just good.

Money Pit
My wife is starting to look strikingly like Shelly Long and iI am morphing into Tom hanks. Anyone know what that means? The Money Pit!
We are still messing with the electrical systems of this new house. I'm thinking we know our electrician well enough now that he may be in the will.
This weekend I went down into the basement to get a pizza for dinner and found out one of the contractors had unplugged the freezer in order to plug in a machine and didn't plug the freezer back in. So that was about $400 worth of food down the drain (We had a bunch of USDA PRIME NY Strips). He didn't mean to do it and the business responsible was really cool. they are paying us back for the food. For me that's all I need. Mistakes happen. What I need to hear when they do is...What can we do to make it right. that's exactly what these guys did.
The other problem from the weekend is my fault. When Notre Dame scored with like 2 minutes left, I was standing in front fo the TV and under the ceiling fan. i am a taller guy so when I raised my arms in celebration...the light above me EXPLODED. Glass everywhere! Took us two days to find all the shards of glass, and now we need new light covers. I need to learn to celebrate in a more subdued manor.

I hope you all have a good day!

Just some Thoughts

Good Morning. I can't say I'm going to be that organized today. It's been a crazy 24 hours and really a crazy few months. I think the chaos is starting to have an effect.
We're finishing a bathroom up at the new house and things are actually going quite well. It's the other quirks of an older home that can trip you up.
We had a plumber over yesterday to deal with a couple of small issues...turns out he needed to do some work on the boiler.
I left to go back to work to do the Noon show...no problem; until I got a call at 11:30 saying there was sewage backing up into my basement. Can't do anything about it. Thank God we have a competent woman staying with our kiddos and watching over our home. She called a sewer service that was set up to get there just as I was getting home.
So we went down to the basement when the guy arrived. The sewer service would have to wait. I got to the basement to find a thin haze of what smelled like smoke. Now we've just had some major electrical work done as well, and this is an old house, so you never know what's going to happen. I didn't mess around. I went upstairs and called the fire department and asked that they come over and take a look. Better safe than sorry with two eighteen-month old kids sleeping upstairs. Fire Department came over, didn't find any problems but identified the smell...The plumber soldered the new piece of equipment to the boiler. It left the smoke and smell and there's really not a lot of good venting in that basement.
So, feeling like a little bit of a freak, I turned my attention to the sewer. That hadn't been cleaned out since Henry Wallace lived in my neighborhood. So the guys snaked out the piping and the crap, as they say, can flow downhill.
By 3:30 the carpenters were back making enough noise to wake up the boys from a nap and I just wanted to get the heck out of the house. We went to the gym where the boys could run around and I could get a workout in. I feel much better this morning.

Just a copula other thoughts:
-I now identify with people who get sewage in their basement. Those people in Elkhart deserve an answer.
-Drive at a Police officer with your car, pull a gun on a Police officer...whatever...if you are headed at them in any kind of a threatening way...you are going to get shot. Police officers deserve the right to protect themselves.
-RVTV continues to be one of the best annual events at this station. I continue to feel guilty about waking up the guys in Ames a few years ago with the Fire Department.
-Now I wish I'd bought some Casey's stock back in January.
-Richard Daley is stepping down after his term expires as Chicago's Mayor. Whatever you think about Daley and Chicago politics, the man LOVES the City and has done some really good things. He's a tough act to follow.
-Sandra Day O'Connor is her in Des Moines today talking about why it's important to keep politics out of the Judiciary. I agree.
Let's see, A Reagan appointed, Goldwater-era conservative does not support the effort to oust Iowa's Supreme Court Justices because they ruled on a question put before them.
You would think that would make someone who calls themselves a conservative take notice...
-Gen, Ray Odierno is back from Iraq and took the opinion that many military men have. The Church planning on burning the Koran on the 9/11 anniversary puts US troops in danger.
Why are we giving these people any attention?
In this day and age, it's important that the majority of voices going out to the world from the US, be the ones who say this is wrong. We respect their right to have an opinion and even to burn a religious book in protest...but it is not the stance of a majority of Americans. More people need to say that. Saying nothing or trying to ignore this kind of hate is the way it festers below the surface.
As always, comment if you like.

Labor Day, Sex Offender Wall, and Money=Happiness?

Good Morning!
Sorry about missing the blog yesterday but I imagine a lot of you weren't anywhere near a computer and could care less what was on WHOTV.COM yesterday. So anyway here's the News..

Labor Day
It's the start of Campaign season and I found a few things interesting yesterday.
-New WSJ/NBC News Poll shows more people think they want Republicans to control Congress. If you step back and look at this objectively...that's about kicking the guys out who are in power...Not as much about Republican Democrat..
-I thought an article I read about John Boehner as the next Speaker of The House...That's putting the cart before the horse I think.
-You can't be mad Democrats are spending too much, and at the same time ask for more government assistance!
-The President announced plans to spend another $50 billion on Roads, Runways and Rails. Just an observation: If you build a Road, you give a guy a job for constructions season. If you Give a company a tax break, they might be able to afford hiring an employee or a lower bid on a job. It's the old...Give a man a fish...story.
The Labor Secretary said it yesterday...The Government can't create jobs.

Sex Offender Wall
So let me get this straight...State Lawmakers gave the DOC a million dollars to build a wall at Fort Des Moines? To protect the kids at the Zoo? Did a miss a report of some kid getting attacked...approached?...looked at sideways at the Zoo? Are you letting your kids hang around at the Zoo by themselves?
This might be the worst allocation of money I've seen the state make in a long time. Can we not find a better use of a million bucks?
This is one that makes some parents feel better and in this...we (The media) are the problem. We actually went to the Zoo yesterday and asked a parent if she thought a wall would fix "the problem". What problem? Did you know there's a McDonald's and the YMCA that are BOTH closer to the sex offenders? Where's their million bucks for a wall?
Did you know these guys aren't' locked up? This is a halfway house. They're re-entering society. And my favorite. The vast majority of sexual assaults against kids are perpetrated by someone you know. So go ask the legislature for a million bucks and build a wall around your house...cause that's the only way you're going to keep your kids absolutely safe.

Money and Happiness
So a study concludes that $75,000 is the point, at which money ca actually bring you the most happiness. Before that, you wish you had more. More than that and you start stressing about having or making more money.
I would disagree. I think happiness is a personal stat4e of being. People who have no money can be happy...people with a lot of money can be miserable. Money does not equal happiness but I also don't think it hurts.
I think someone should do a study with someone who makes an average salary, but then gives them bonus income when they want to take a vacation or need to buy something that's going to be a big expense. See how big of a difference money makes in that person's personal happiness.

Finally
I wanted to share this one picture. JT decided he didn't want to nap on Saturday. I'd gone out to run an errand but when I came back he was on the couch sitting watching golf with Sally. We flipped on the Notre Dame game and I left the room for just a second. When I came back...this is what I found...

Yep, he's my kid. Go Irish!
As Always I appreciate your thoughts on this stuff...Agree? Disagree? Why? If you don't often comment...feel free, we love to hear from ya!
I hope you all have a great day.

Low Bid? Clones and Hawks and Did you SEE This?

Good morning!
A couple good ones to get to this morning so...
To the News

Low Bid
SO it has to get your attention that the VA in Knoxville paid more than $800,000 for it's LAWNCARE! A guy who bid more like $250,000 smells a rat. I think anyone with an abacus and a lawnmower can do the math. Lets just say they hired a crew of guys to do nothing but take care of the grounds. Mow the lawn, plant flowers etc...
So you could hire ten guys at 80-thousand dollars total compensation to MOW THE LAWN. I need to get a job with the VA.
If I'm the VA I better have a pretty good reason to spend that much more money. Is there no local company that's got the capacity to do the work? If there isn't a reasonable bid can't you just send it out for bid again?

D+
So that's Drake's new slogan...or ad campaign or however they're using it.m We got into a debate about whether it was effective to get you attention. I said I thought it might work out in Drake's favor...think of the free advertising...CNN wants to talk to the president of the University about why they take a near failing academic grade and make it the schools ad tag line. David Maxwell proceeds to say all of the great things about Drake and all of the sudden you've got two minutes worth of free advertising on national TV that5 would have cost you a lot of money.
Now, I see the other side of this. It looks like the people at Drake aren't smart enough to realize that's a failing grade and they're an academic institution. It's a negative image to promote your University.
What do you think...is any publicity, good publicity? Or does Drake's new ad campaign fail?

Clones and Hawks
So I figured it out while watching Iowa State's Home opener last night. As a neutral observer of the Cross state rivalry, I am always interested to see how the Cy-Hawk games plays out but I don't actually care who wins. that said, I figured out why I find myself rooting for the Cyclones most of the time. It's respect.
Many of the Hawk fans I know respect ISU, and even WANT to see Iowa State win every other week of the year...But a majority I hear on sports talk...in the community...even some unnamed friends, have NO respect for Iowa State. They act as if it's their school's birthright to win...a foregone conclusion.
Meanwhile Cyclone fans are easier to root for because they rarely say anything bad about the Hawks.
I only showed up eleven years ago so I've actually seen a pretty even series so far. Since they've lost this game so many times in the last decade, it's always struck me as odd that Hawkeye fans are so cocky. Here's what I walked away from last night's game thinking. Iowa better respect Iowa State.

Did you see this?
Is this the most uncomfortable thing you've ever seen in politics? This is Arizona's Governor. The one that signed the tough immigration law....she took office after Janet Napalatano resigned to take the job at Homeland Security.
She's up for re-election and is up by about 20 points in the polls. I think if I were a voter I would want to reconsider that closely after seeing this performance. This is her opening statement...not an off the cuff answer to a question...this is the first play of the game...the one you practice all week. the speech you have memorized. and even if you totally freeze, don't you think the people we elect to run a state should be able to articulate their message off the top of their head? Should a TV camera make the leader of the Arizona state government freeze up?
What do you think? BTW I do not agree or endorse the tag line to this youtube posting.

OK is there enough for you to comment on there?
Let it out...let me have it...your turn.

Earl, Game Day and Caffeine on my Eyelids

Good Morning!
Can't seem to keep my eyes open this morning even with the help of caffeine...on my eyes. I'll get to that in a minute.

First, The News:
Earl
Hurricane Earl went from a Cat3 storm yesterday to a Cat4 storm with winds of 145 mph or more this morning. This thing is WAY to close for comfort if I'm livin in North Carolina right now. What a bummer for all those people hoping for one last big weekend at the beach.

Couche-tard
So Alimentation Couche Tard is trying to buy Casey's. The company bid close to 30 bucks a share in June, trying for a hostile takeover. The Company rejected the offer and the market rewarded shareholders. The stock price hit $38/share yesterday. You can see why CoucheTard wants Casey's.

So you think Iowa is a Flyover?
Consider this article posted by a bunch of people I know on Facebook. It's an AOL article on the Brain Belt. Yep...you heard it..the Brain Belt. I guess Silicon Valley is so...last decade...
Anyway, if you live here you know all of the things that other people seem to marvel at when they move here. To my friends in big cities who enjoy the amenities big cities have to offer, I say, more power to ya. To those of you who feel buried and can't seem to get ahead...I say, my mortgage on a new four bedroom house is probably half your downtown rent.

Game Day
College football starts in Ames tonight and all the clone fans are really excited. they should be...nothing better than a good tailgate on a September night. Jeriann says this is going to be a good one.
ISU officials are saying you might want to leave the buses and RV's at home for this one. The ground around Jack Trice is still soggy from flooding. Good luck with that ISU.

Game Day2
What do you think of the new divisions in the Big Ten? I think I like the fact that Northwestern can still upset the Hawks every year.
What did you think of the video of Josh Koepple getting hit on his scooter? Nasty...
If you're an opposing Defensive lineman do you feel like you've got a shot at getting to the quarterback this year? The guy got hit by a truck and got up! If you haven't seen it...

Caffine on my Eyelids
I'm not joking. I actually put caffeine on my eyelids this morning. it wasn't some desperate way to be more alert on less than normal sleep...it was actually in some moisturizer. I bought it cause I'm having a bit of a bad reaction to the new make-up we have to wear in HD. nothing seemed to work so I went to Kiehls. Here's the description of the product:

Our ultimate solution for eye-area fatigue after a long flight
or a long night, our formula is made with cooling Cucumber and Alfalfa Extracts to energize and hydrate the thinner skin of the eye area. Its potent blend of Vitamin E and Caffeine fights fatigue as it helps combat dark circles and puffiness. With regular use, skin appears strengthened and the look of fine dehydration lines is reduced.

I'm not sure any of that happened.
At least I got two free samples. I'm probably not going to buy it, but it was fun to see people's reaction when I told them I was going to put caffeine on my eyes.

I hope you have a good Thursday.

Turning the Page, Earl and Child Stars

Good Morning!
I need to get home to greet my parents. They are on their way from Iowa City (they like to stop halfway from Chicago) so I'm going to spend part of the morning with them before I come back for the Noon. Their presence in Iowa means we will have to less viewers of the blog...someone get their co-worker to log on...I'd like to keep my job.

To the News
Turn the Page
I did not see the president's speech last night. It wasn't as if he made any headlines, it was more a speech to mark the moment...and it wasn't really that big of a "moment". Officially our lead combat role is done in Iraq, but as Andy Fales pointed out last night; we still have a huge US presence there and will for some time.
So what did you think of the speech? Did you like/dislike the reference to President Bush? I maintain, history will be much kinder to Bush.

Earl
A meteorologist friend of mine was on twitter this morning and emailed a funny tweet about this latest hurricane.
@AFFIONCROCKETT: Did they name a hurricane EARL??? he finna come thru and HANDLE *#%&...in flip flops and a WIFE BEATER.

Child Stars
So I watched the highlights of that little girl who sings opera on America's Got Talent. I think she's just wonderful...that's great that she can sing. I was disturbed at the interview with he we aired on the Noon show yesterday. She's in fifth grade and she sings like an angel. Some adult has gotten in this girl's head though...her answers don't sound anything like a fifth grader, and not in a mature, "isn't that kid going to go far" kind of way. It's more a pre-teen beauty queen creepy Jonbenet Ramsey kind of way. She's talking about her "mission". Mission? Her mission should be to keep singing, enjoying it as much as she can, and getting into sixth grade. By the way, her "mission" is entirely focused on her and how good she is.
I hope I am dead wrong about that girl...I don't know her. The way it sounds makes me cringe.

Five Songs
Here's a variation of a post that a friend of mine put up on Facebook.
Don't think about it, just name five albums that will always stick with you (he asked for fifteen).
This guy is a big music geek. His list was pretty good. I didn't look at his, but mine would be a little more lame...
1. Beatles (62-66 and 66-70)
2. Jack o' Pierce (JP or Live from the Americas)
3. Beach Boys (Pet Sounds)
4. Indigo Girls (self titled)
5. Frank Sinatra (The Reprise Collection)
I would add to this some albums that stick with me but are a little more eclectic:Kenny Rogers The Gambler, Garth Brooks No Fences, and The Muppet's Christmas Album.
Now you.
